Clear Cycle Routes = Safe Rides All Year
Treat cycle routes as critical transport infrastructure too! We’re campaigning for cycle routes that are Clear to Ride all year. Grit in Winter, sweep in Autumn, clear in Summer.

The Highland Council and Transport Scotland say they promote the Sustainable Transport Hierarchy, which prioritises walking, cycling and public transport over private car use. But when winter comes, the reality looks very different:
- Roads for cars are routinely gritted and cleared.
- Meanwhile, cycle routes and footpaths are left untreated – pushing cyclists off their bikes
This discrepancy undermines active travel. It sends the message that cycling and walking are only supported in fair weather, despite being essential for health, climate, and affordable transport.
We must treat cycle routes and footways as critical transport infrastructure – and maintain them as such, in every season.
